Chars Leclerc is a French main battle tank developed by Nexter Systems. It was named after General Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque, a famous French general during World War II. The tank was developed in the 1980s as a successor to the AMX 30 tank which was in service with the French Army since the 1960s.
The Leclerc is armed with a 120mm smoothbore cannon, which can fire a range of ammunition including armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) rounds, high explosive anti-tank (HEAT) rounds, and anti-personnel rounds. The tank also has a 12.7 mm machine gun and a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun.
The Leclerc is a heavily armored tank with composite armor, which makes it highly resistant to enemy fire. It has an advanced fire control system that includes thermal imaging and laser rangefinding capabilities, allowing the tank to engage targets accurately at long ranges. The tank is powered by a 1,500 horsepower diesel engine, which gives it a top speed of 72 km/h.
The Leclerc is in service with the French Army and is also used by the United Arab Emirates. The tank has seen combat in different conflicts including the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, and the War in Mali. It is considered one of the most advanced main battle tanks in the world.
